Quote of the Day #91

Playing the guitar is like telling the truth - you never have to worry about repeating the same [lie] if you told the truth. You don't have to pretend or cover up. If someone asks you again, you don't have to think about it or worry about it... because there it is. It's you.

-- B. B. King

Quote of the Day #90

The point of living and of being an optimist, is to be foolish enough to believe the best is yet to come.

Quotes of the Day #89

The Truth Lies Below
Honest criticism is hard to take, particularly from a relative, a friend, an acquaintance, or a stranger.

-- Franklin P. Jones

A lie told often enough becomes the truth.

-- Lenin

Focus on Process, not Product

In Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea, the fisherman Santiago goes 84 days without catching a fish. Yet throughout the dry spell he stays focused on the process - the proper way to catch a fish. He fishes the right spots. He keeps his lines precisely at the right depth. In this way, he knows the drought is no fault of his own. "I would rather be exact," the old man says. "The when the luck comes you are ready."

This is the way of Zen Guitar.

How you play a note is just as important as what that note is. [Henry Kaiser]

Synonyms: comment, gossip

Quotes of the Day #88

He who praises you for what you lack wishes to take from you what you have.

-- Don Juan Manuel

A tree may yield you shade, fruit and blooms; in return for this service you should not try to uproot it and carry it off. Acquisitiveness makes you clutch at a thing that pleased you and drives you to fight for it, just as you would fight for a thing that stirred your ill will.

-- Quoting Sage Vasishta from "Gods, Demons and Others" by R K Narayan

Our envy of others devours us most of all.

-- Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Quotes of the Day #87

When you have insomnia, you're never really asleep... and you're never really awake.

With insomnia, nothing is real. Everything is far away. Everything is a copy of a copy of a copy.

-- From "Fight Club"

Quotes of the Day #86

Arthur Clarke
If we have learned one thing from the history of invention and discovery, it is that, in the long run - and often in the short one - the most daring prophecies seem laughably conservative.

It has yet to be proven that intelligence has any survival value.

When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.
(Clarke's first law)

The only way to discover the limits of the possible is to go beyond them into the impossible.
(Clarke's second law)

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
(Clarke's third law)

A hundred years ago, the electric telegraph made possible - indeed, inevitable - the United States of America. The communications satellite will make equally inevitable a United Nations of Earth; let us hope that the transition period will not be equally bloody.

It may be that the old astrologers had the truth exactly reversed, when they believed that the stars controlled the destinies of men. The time may come when men control the destinies of stars.

The inspirational value of the space program is probably of far greater importance to education than any input of dollars... A whole generation is growing up which has been attracted to the hard disciplines of science and engineering by the romance of space.

The best measure of a man's honesty isn't his income tax return. It's the zero adjust on his bathroom scale.

Quote of the Day #85

The man who doesn't read good books has no advantage over the man who can't read them.

-- Mark Twain

Quote of the Day #84

The Angst of Rock Department
What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?

-- From High Fidelity

Quote of the Day #83

You are God's special gift to the world. You are a bright and shining star. When you look into your eyes in the mirror each morning, tell yourself, I am hope. I am joy. I am free. I am happy. I am love. More important. I am me.

-- Lucille Gambrell

Indian Mythology #1

Dec 29:
Ambar's post about the shape shifting qualities of Indra reminded me of a juicy bit of mythological gossip regarding him. Indra had a propensity for jumping into bed with every woman he got the hots for. And that was considerably aided by his shape shifting, as he could "become" the woman's husband or lover and she wouldn't suspect a thing.

So one day he gets the hots for this woman and turns out, she's the wife of this sage, whose name I don't recall. So true to "form", he becomes the sage and goes after the woman. Unfortunately, he got caught in the act by the sage in question. The enraged holy man cursed Indra by taking away his genitalia! So Indra, king of the devas has no penis!!

Let's see anyone making a comic book out of that :-)

May 17 Update:
This info is from "Gods, Demons & Others" by R K Narayan. He has retold several ancient Indian legends in the book.

The sage in question above was Gautama and his wife was Ahilya. Indra was gievn his just rewards and Ahilya was (undeservedly) turned into a stone by the roadside. In the anceint Indian epic 'Ramayana', Ram releases Ahilya from the curse and turns her back into human form.

Word of the Day #7

tl;dr

Literally, "Too long; didn't read"
  1. Said whenever a nerd makes a post that is too long to bother reading.
  2. Any over wordy thread or long drawn out story that people don't want to really read, but reply to anyway.
  3. Also a form of trolling or humorous reply telling some one to get to the point.
From The Urban Dictionary

There's No Escaping Death and Taxes

A little boy wanted Rs.50 very badly and prayed for weeks, but nothing happened.

Finally he decided to write God a letter requesting the Rs.50. When the postal authorities received the letter addressed to God, INDIA, they decided to forward it to the President of the India as a joke.

The President was so amused, that he instructed his secretary to send the little boy Rs.20. The President thought this would appear to be a lot of money to a little boy, and he did not want to spoil the kid.

The little boy was delighted with Rs.20, and decided to write a thank you note to God, which read:

"Dear God: Thank you very much for sending the money. However, I noticed that you sent it through the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, and those donkeys deducted Rs.30 in taxes ... "

Curiosity

I had saved this Essay from an old issue of 'TIME' Magazine. It is a tribute to journalist Daniel Pearl, who was kidnapped and subsequently beheaded by terrorists in Pakistan in February of 2002. I am a curious person by nature, thus my nick "The Seeker" and this strikes a chord with me. I think the day I'm not curious anymore, is the day I'm not myself anymore.
A sheer avidity to know things is the most endearing trait of any journalist. Long ago, the novelist and journalist John Hersey wrote in a sketch of Henry Luce, "He was amazed and delighted to learn whatever he had not known before." Curiosity is the noblest form of intellectual energy; in any case, your mind goes nowhere without it - except maybe to fanaticism.

Offensive Ads

Pictures and text from the Love Your Body Foundation. They also have a page for Positive Ads. Its interesting, though not as funny :)

Gucci Posted by Hello This ad attempts to demonstrate a woman's "place" in the world—at a man's feet—right below his...uh... Just don't stand up too fast, sister!

Maker's Mark Posted by Hello What is it about selling alcohol that makes advertisers want to belittle and insult women... does it really make men feel more powerful? Don't answer that.

Longchamp Posted by Hello This is an ad for luggage, right? And the nearly naked, bronzed woman is there because...? When creativity fails, insert sex.

Dior Posted by Hello The text reads, "New! Dior Addict Lipstick to Die For...in 30 killer shades... Get hooked. Now." Dior proudly uses the themes of addiction and death to sell lipstick, under the impession that the tactic is edgy and original. Not.

Winston Posted by Hello Winston tries to convince young women how tough and cool they can be by smoking while waiting for a man. Hope he arrives soon ...before lung cancer sets in.

Candies Posted by Hello This is too easy. Is that a space shuttle on your computer, or are you just happy to see me? This ad is so obvious in its "subliminal" message, it's sad.

Calvin Klein Posted by Hello Good ol' Calvin — always leading the way with images of nearly naked, pre-pubescent-looking women and girls.

Ralph Lauren Posted by Hello Not to be outdone, Ralph offers that perfect look to wear while scratching your back on a tree while waiting for, um...the stableboy?

Misty Posted by Hello Brown & Williamson appears to be marketing cigarettes to pre-teen girls with this ad that practically makes smoking look wholesome. Really not.

Procrastinator's Creed

1. I believe that if anything is worth doing, it would have been done already.

2. I shall never move quickly, except to avoid more work or find excuses.

3. I will never rush into a job without a lifetime of consideration.

4. I shall meet all of my deadlines directly in proportion to the amount of bodily injury I could expect to receive from missing them.

5. I firmly believe that tomorrow holds the possibility for new technologies, astounding discoveries, and a reprieve from my obligations.

6. I truly believe that all deadlines are unreasonable regardless of the amount of time given.

7. I shall never forget that the probability of a miracle, though infinitesmally small, is not exactly zero.

8. If at first I don't succeed, there is always next year.

9. I shall always decide not to decide, unless of course I decide to change my mind.

10. I shall always begin, start, initiate, take the first step, and/or write the first word, when I get around to it.

11. I obey the law of inverse excuses which demands that the greater the task to be done, the more insignificant the work that must be done prior to beginning the greater task.

12. I know that the work cycle is not plan/start/finish, but is wait/plan/plan.

13. I will never put off until tomorrow, what I can forget about forever.

14. I will become a member of the ancient Order of Two-Headed Turtles (the Procrastinator's Society) if they ever get it organized.

Quotes of the Day #79

Quotes from "Closer"
If you believe in love at first sight, you never stop looking.

Dan: What's so great about the truth? Try lying for a change. It's the currency of the world.

Alice: Lying is the most fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off... but it's better if you do.

Alice: It's a bunch of sad strangers photographed beautifully, and... all the glittering assholes who appreciate art say it's beautiful 'cause that's what they wanna see. But the people in the photos are sad, and alone... But the pictures make the world seem beautiful, so... the exhibition is reassuring which makes it a lie, and everyone loves a big fat lie.
Larry: I'm the big fat liar's boyfriend.

Larry: I know who you are. I love you. I love everything about you that hurts.

Alice: So you're Anna's boyfriend.
Larry: A princess *can* kiss a toad.
Alice: Frog.
Larry: Toad.
Alice: Frog.
Larry: Toad. Frog. Lobster. They're all the same.

Larry: There's a girl out there who calls herself Venus, what's her real name?
Alice: Pluto.

Dan: You think love it simple. You think the heart is like a diagram.
Larry: You've ever seen a human heart? It looks like a fist, wrapped in blood! Go fuck yourself!

Alice: Where is this love? I can't see it, I can't touch it. I can't feel it. I can hear it. I can hear some words, but I can't do anything with your easy words.

Alice: Why isn't love enough?

Anna: Why is the sex so important?
Larry: Because I'm a fucking caveman!

Dan: I want Anna back.
Larry: She's made her choice.
Dan: I owe you an apology. I fell in love with her. My intention was not to make you suffer.
Larry: So where's the apology? Ya cunt.
Dan: I apologize. If you love her you'll let her go so she can be happy.
Larry: She doesn't want to be happy.
Dan: Everybody wants to be happy.
Larry: Depressives don't. They want to be unhappy to confirm they're depressed. If they were happy they couldn't be depressed anymore. They'd have to go out into the world and live. Which can be depressing.

Euphemisms

Calling for Huey: Slang term for vomiting
(Probably of Australian origin)

In an interesting condition: Euphemism for pregnant
(Originated in Victorian England)

Kick the bucket
: Die
(The wooden frame that slaughtered animals were hung from is known as a bucket. The death spasms of the animals caused them to kick the bucket)

In the club: Pregnant
(More fully 'In the pudding club'. Pudding = semen)

Like the Dickens: A lot; as in 'hurts like the dickens'
(Nothing to do with Charles Dickens. Dickens is a euphemism for the word devil, possibly via devilkins. Shakespeare used it in 'the Merry Wives of Windsor: 'I cannot tell what the dickens his name is my husband had him of.')

Yaara Seeli Seeli

By Gulzar
[With apologies for my limited abilities at translating his masterful work]

I pine as the night burns
My lover, come to me
My saviour, come quickly
What kind of living is this? What kind of dying is this?

With pieces of broken bangles..
I struggle to remake my hands
What did I leave in streets past
That I pass through them again and again..?

No god above, no Shadow below...
This last companion also forsakes me
The splendour outside
Hides my despair inside...

Quote of the Day #77

Quote of the Day #75

Taken from Things My Girlfriend And I Have Argued About's Mailing List by Mil Millington:

Margret and I are sitting on the sofa. I get up to make a cup of tea. A moue swirls her face as I walk by. 'Fwww,' she says, looking at me and wriggling a little to convey discomfort. 'Turn the heating up, or down.'

I Am Not Yours

by Sara Teasdale

I am not yours, not lost in you,
Not lost, although I long to be
Lost as a candle lit at noon,
Lost as a snowflake in the sea.

You love me, and I find you still
A spirit beautiful and bright,
Yet I am I, who long to be
Lost as a light is lost in light.

Oh plunge me deep in love - put out
My senses, leave me deaf and blind,
Swept by the tempest of your love,
A taper in a rushing wind.

South Park Quotes #5

Butters: 30 minutes ago, I thought I saw Sigourney Weaver, but turns out it was a dead horse.

Jimmy: Fellas, are you sure all of this is ethical? [Jimmy is concerned about questionable practices on their school news show. :)]
Cartman: We're in 4th Grade, Jimmy, we dont even know what ethical means

Butters: Sexy Action School News Team Ho!

Jimmy: Look fellas, I have got a real problem with the direction our news show is going. We're dumbing down the school.
Stan: No, Jimmy, the schools already dumb, we're just giving them what they want.

Cartman: How bout we do a show where we kill Butters?

Kyle: I understand who Craig's show gets such high ratings, half the school is high on cough medicine.

Quotes of the Day #74

Quotes from "Dune" by Frank Herbert

Deep in the human unconscious is a pervasive need for a logical universe that makes sense. But the real universe is always one step beyond logic. - from "The Sayings of Muad'Dib" by the Princess Irulan.

'Mood? What has mood to do with it? You fight when the necessity arises — no matter the mood! Mood's a thing for cattle or making love or playing the baliset. It's not for fighting.' — counsel of Gurney Halleck to young Paul.

"Much that was called religion has carried an unconscious attitude of hostility toward life. True religion must teach that life is filled with joys pleasing to the eye of God, that knowledge without action is empty. All men must see that the teaching of religion by rules and rote is largely a hoax. The proper teaching is recognized with ease. You can know it without fail because it awakens within you that sensations which tells you this is something you've always known."

Secret Garden

By Bruce Springsteen

She'll let you in her house
If you come knockin' late at night
She'll let you in her mouth if the
Words you say are right

If you pay the price
She'll let you deep inside
But there's a secret garden she hides

She'll let you in her car
To go drivin' round
She'll let you into the parts of herself
That'll bring you down

She'll let you in her heart
If you got a hammer and a vise
But into her secret garden, don't think twice

You've gone a million miles
How far'd you get to that place where
You can't remember and you can't forget

She'll lead you down a path
There'll be tenderness in the air
She'll let you come just far enough
So you know she's really there
She'll look at you and smile
And her eyes will say
She's got a secret garden
Where everything you want
Where everything you need
Will always stay a million miles away

(For A.V.)

Further On (Up The Road)

By Bruce Springsteen

Now I been out in the desert, just doin' my time
Searchin' through the dust, lookin' for a sign
If there's a light up ahead, well brother I don't know
But I got this fever burnin' in my soul
So let's take the good times as they go
And I'll meet you further on up the road

Where the way is dark and the night is cold
One sunny mornin' we'll rise I know
And I'll meet you further on up the road
