Indian Mythology #1

Dec 29:
Ambar's post about the shape shifting qualities of Indra reminded me of a juicy bit of mythological gossip regarding him. Indra had a propensity for jumping into bed with every woman he got the hots for. And that was considerably aided by his shape shifting, as he could "become" the woman's husband or lover and she wouldn't suspect a thing.

So one day he gets the hots for this woman and turns out, she's the wife of this sage, whose name I don't recall. So true to "form", he becomes the sage and goes after the woman. Unfortunately, he got caught in the act by the sage in question. The enraged holy man cursed Indra by taking away his genitalia! So Indra, king of the devas has no penis!!

Let's see anyone making a comic book out of that :-)

May 17 Update:
This info is from "Gods, Demons & Others" by R K Narayan. He has retold several ancient Indian legends in the book.

The sage in question above was Gautama and his wife was Ahilya. Indra was gievn his just rewards and Ahilya was (undeservedly) turned into a stone by the roadside. In the anceint Indian epic 'Ramayana', Ram releases Ahilya from the curse and turns her back into human form.

Comments:
lol, there's even a real-life equivalent in this case... anyone remember 'lorena bobbitt?'

Not quite the same conclusion though ... Indra didn't get it re-attached :)

bobbitt got his dick reconnected? whoa, is it possible to have a dismembered body part function after it's reconnected? perhaps the vascular all vital supplies can be rejoined, but do the severed nerve connections join properly of their own?

I'm sure he got it re-connected, I'm just not sure how well it works :) Body parts can be rejoined, if they are frozen quickly and the cells do not die.

I guess it works then :p
